Am I Required To Have Health Insurance?

In California, most people are required by law to have health insurance or pay a tax penalty. In 2020, the penalty is $695/adult, $347.50/child under 18, or 2.5% of your annual household income over your California tax filing threshold, whichever is higher.

Do I Have An Options For My Health Insurance?

Of course! Covered California offers four levels of coverage: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Insurance companies pay a portion of covered services, and the benefits offered within each level are the same no matter which insurance company you choose.

  • Choose Platinum or Gold and you'll pay a higher monthly premium, but you'll pay less for medical services.

  • Choose Silver or Bronze and you'll pay a lower monthly premium, but you'll pay more for medical services.

  • A minimum coverage plan is available to those under 30 or those 30 and over who have received a hardship exemption from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

What If I Dont Qualified?

Don't worry! Besides Covered California Health Insurance, we will also help you apply for Medi-cal and other type of insurance that would benefit you.

What If I Still Not Qualified?

When you're not qualified for any type of health insurance, we will offer you a Sliding Fee Scale. It is a service that give YOU a discount based ONLY on your household family size and your income.

The following is needed for every household member who will be covered:

  • Proof of current household income

  • California ID or driver's license

  • Proof of citizenship or satisfactory immigration status

  • Social Security Number

What Happened After I Applied?

You can apply online on or in person. A single application will let you know if you qualify for coverage through Covered California or Medi-Cal.  Once the application is submitted, it will be sent to your local county human services agency for a determination if you are qualified for Medi-Cal or Covered California.  If more information is needed, the county will contact you to provide more documentation.  During the next 45 days, the county will mail you a notice telling you if you qualify. If you are eligible, you will receive a Medi-Cal or Covered California benefits identification card (BIC) in the mail and also an information package that explains the available health plan options in your county and how to enroll.  Our Certified Enrollment Specialist are here to assist any individual or family in applying/ renewing for healthcare coverage.

Essential Health Benefits

All health insurance plans now share some common characteristics. The Affordable Care Act requires that all health insurance plans offered in the individual and small-group markets must provide a comprehensive package of items and services, known as essential health benefits.

These benefits fit into the following 10 categories:

  • Ambulatory patient services.

  • Emergency services.

  • Hospitalization.

  • Maternity and newborn care.

  • Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment.

  • Prescription drugs. For more information about prescription drug benefits, visit the page Prescription Drugs.

  • Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices.

  • Laboratory services.

  • Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management. For more information about preventive services with no cost sharing, click here.

  • Pediatric services, including dental and vision care. Dental insurance for children is included in the price of all health plans purchased in the exchange.

The requirement for insurance plans to offer essential health benefits is just one of many changes in health coverage that began in 2014.
